Budget 2017 Consultations

B.C.’s economy continues to lead the country, with an economic profile that includes diversified industries, continued balanced budgets and a prudent fiscal plan. This government’s continued commitment to balanced budgets and strong expenditure management has helped keep British Columbia’s economy on solid ground, even as other jurisdictions struggle economically, and British Columbians will benefit from the dividends of that hard work.

Our balanced budget is the keystone of our economic plan, providing new investments in programs and services while ensuring taxpayers get to keep more of their hard-earned money. It demonstrates our commitment to living within our means and to securing an affordable future for coming generations of British Columbians. We are continuing to literally lay the foundation as our province continues to grow – by improving existing and building new schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, dams, and by investing in education, health care, priority services that protect our most vulnerable citizens, and environmental protection.

The results of these investments are evident in every corner of the province – something we hope all British Columbians will reflect and comment on as we seek your input and ideas on how we can do even better in serving our citizens. And we’re accomplishing this while we move even closer to the goal of eliminating our operating debt – that part of our debt that has gone towards helping us to provide services in the past.

As we continue to plan for this province’s economic future, British Columbians once again have the opportunity to share their priorities for Balanced Budget 2017. We want your input and ideas to help shape B.C.’s economic direction, so government can continue to improve program delivery and services within the context of a balanced budget. As part of this process, we’ve released the Budget 2017 Consultation Paper (PDF).

The consultation paper asks British Columbians to share their thoughts on how surplus dollars should be prioritized. It seeks input on how government can continue its work to support job-creating industries and make our businesses more competitive, as well as continuing to address housing affordability.

The Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services – an all-party committee of the Legislative Assembly – will hold province-wide consultations in September and October to seek the views of British Columbians. We hope to see you there.
